Storytime: From flag sellers to NBA partners - the Nutmeg Mills brothers
Nutmeg was founded in 1980 by the brothers Martin and Richard Jacobson and is today one of the best-known brands in the sportswear merchandise sector. Nutmeg vintage clothing stands for large, detailed prints and illustrations, especially in connection with well-known US sports teams. For all fans, the merch combines passion and support for their favorite teams with leisure and casual wear. Such team merch or college merch was relatively rare and difficult to obtain back then.
With proceeds from family businesses, they bought a clothing store and made their dreams a reality. They named their fashion label after their hometown, the Nutmeg State. At the age of 15, the brothers were already selling flags in front of the sports field at Yale University and knew exactly how to do business. They soon signed a contract with the University of Florida to produce sports and college clothing - and things started to go uphill quickly, because Florida was followed by Michigan and many other universities. Well-known US sports teams and even professional leagues followed. In 1981, the NBA was landed as the first sponsor. Nutmeg Mills was the first brand to be sponsored by the NBA. In return, Nutmeg was an official NBA outfitter and thus had the perfect opportunity to promote its products. Finally, contracts with MLB, NHL and NFL were gradually closed. In 1994 the company was finally sold to VF Corporation.
